Natural supplements for sports nutrition are becoming more mainstream, as more athletes look for ways to fuel their workouts and aid exercise recovery.
A New York Times article covers the growing consumer desire to add supplements to their exercise routine, and said the fitness nutritional industry, mostly aimed at young men, earned $2.7 billion in 2008.
They said many of these supplements are minimally regulated by FDA, which concerns many doctors. However, they praised some natural sports supplements, saying when taken in sensible doses, they can help people who already eat healthfully bulk their workouts.
Whey protein and creatine, they noted, can help athletes become stronger faster. Steve Hoffman, a personal trainer the quote, recommended the amino acid arginine and caffeine for those who want to intensify their workouts
They did caution that many of the doses in these supplements are higher than doctors recommend, which is why they should only be used by adults.
